Helen McCabe Park Grazing Demonstration

The KCCD is partnering with the Cascade Land Conservancy (CLC), Mid Columbia Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group (MCRFEG) and John Eaton who grazes cattle on the Helen McCabe State Park to demonstrate the use of flash grazing as part of a riparian restoration plan.

The park is located on the corner of Canyon Road and Thrall Road. Wilson Creek flows along the south side of the park. The riparian area has a substantial amount of reed canary grass which is difficult to control. Part of the control involves both controlled burns and herbicide applications.

The first controlled burn was completed last week with the help of the Kittitas County Fire District No. 2 and a Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) Crew from North Yakima. The next step will be a massive planting effort in April. Approximately 4,000 trees, shrubs, and cuttings will be planted by WCC crews and volunteers.

WCC crew members monitor the controlled burn at Helen McCabe Park.

Fire District No. 2 had crews and trucks on site for the burn.
